CONGRESS WORKING OF COTONOU 2008 |

The African Water Association (AfWA) held its 14 th CONGRESS at the Cotonou Palais des Congrès (Congress Palace) from February 25 to 28 2008 under the auspices of his Excellency Doctor BONY YAYI, President of the Republic, Head of State and Head of Government of the Republic of Benin and under the effective chairmanship of Mr FELIX T. HESSOU, Minister of Home Affairs and Public Security. The AfWA 2008 Cotonou Congress recorded the participation of 400 delegates from 35 African and European countries. Both the President of the CONGRESS and the AfWA President seized the opportunity of the CONGRESS opening ceremony - that was presided over by the Ministry of Home Affairs - to express their welcoming address to the many Beninese authorities and foreign VIPs who came to attend this African continental event. Messages from the following partner institutions were delivered after the addresses of the President of the Congress and the AfWA, President: of the African Development Bank, UN-HABITAT and World Water Council.

Two conferences for CEOs and MDs of African water and sanitation utilities was organized. The first one aimed at informing CEOs and MDs on the status of the WOP-Africa Program and on the next steps to take, and to elicit their viewpoints on its implementation. The second conference focused on the theme Mobilization of Local Financial Resources and dealed with the development of the Shadow Credit Rating Toolkit. |

| LAUNCHING OF THE WATER OPERATORS PARTNERSHIP AFRICA | ||||||||||||||||||
Official launching of the Water Operators Partnership Africa, a United Nations initiative which objective is to establish Capacity Building among the Water and Sanitation Utilities. The Financing of this programme will be made by the African Development Bank and other donors under the governance of the Africa Water Association and the implementation of the l'Eastern & Southern African Region ( ESAR - IWA). The objective of WOP-Africa is foster the tuning up and improvement of WSUs through increased collaboration among the operators of the water sector for advocacy, learning, networking and support partnerships among utilities. |
