Call for Candidacies Madam, Sir The African Water Association launches a call for candidacies, for the attribution of the AfWA Excellency Award 2008. The candidates files must be transmitted to the Administrative Secretariat of the ASSOCIATION at the latest on November, 1st 2007. The AfWA Excellency Award shall aim at rewarding a persons or organization having contributed significantly to the realization of an activity, a research and an innovation or an action for the development of the water and sanitation sector on a technical, commercial or management level for the benefit of the Members and in respect of the objectives of the AfWA which are: To coordinate the search for knowledge and latest development in the technical, legal, administrative and economic fields for Drinking water production, supply and of sanitation To promote the exchange of information on methods, processes and procedures of drinking water production and supply and sanitation To initiate, encourage and promote any action of cooperation and exchange in professional training in water and sanitation field. The jury is composed of 7 Members and includes 3 members of the Board Committee, 2 representatives of the regular and affiliated members: 1 Representative of the donors, 1 external Personality chosen by the Board Committee and proposed by the Scientific and Technical Council The prize will be awarded to one or several persons or institutions whose candidacies will have been presented, at a rate of one candidacy for each one, by the Companies Members of the AfWA (Regular and Affiliated). No one can present its own candidacy. The Price will consist of a Trophy and/or an amount of money which will be decreed by the President of the Africa Water Association during a solemn public meeting which will take place during the opening ceremony of Congress 2008. DRINKABLE WATER SUPPLY TO UNDERPRIVILEGED AREA The candidate must have been distinguished by an action or a meritorious project whose criteria of appreciation defined by the Scientific and Technical Council are as follows: 1) The degree of implication of the populations supplied during the study, the realization and the implementation of the project, as well as the implication of other partners. 2) Within the framework of a sustainable development the implementation of such a project must give the possibility of a long-term exploitation without significant modification of the infrastructures through out time. 3) The project must be original and must be able to put forward the use of new technologies. 4) The underprivileged areas are numerous in Africa, but water, source of life is a peremptory necessity for all. The project should be able to be implemented in other areas of the country were it was initiated or even in other countries of the continent. 5) The objective of the project should be to give the access to the service of water to all, but any project has a cost which at the end of the line is supported either completely or partially by the consumers. Thus the two principal parameters emerge: The cost of realization of the project and tariffs applied to the consumers in the specific case of the aforesaid project. The first must reveal the inciting character of the second. 6) The realization of the project must have affected the total service supply rate of the local company in charge of the water supply .
